By default, the UniFi 5G Max/Backup is configured as a failover WAN. To use it simultaneously with your primary ISP for load balancing or as a primary connection, follow these steps:
To use your UniFi 5G Max or UniFi 5G Backup as a primary WAN or in load-balancing mode:
- Go to Settings → Internet and enable Load Balancing.
- Set Load Balanced WANs to 2.
- In the WAN priority list, drag WAN3 above WAN2 so that WAN1 and WAN3 are both assigned the Load Balanced role. WAN2 will automatically become the Backup WAN.
- Adjust the load-balancing percentages as desired (50/50 by default).
- Pro-tip: I suggest setting the 5G percentage to a lower value like 10% to prevent overload. T-Mobile throttles YouTube and you may notice slower loading.
In the screenshot:
- WAN1 = Spectrum
- WAN3 = UniFi 5G Max (T-Mobile)
The red arrows show where WAN3 should be moved.
If you're looking for an inexpensive T-Mobile-compatible data plan for the UniFi 5G Max or 5G Backup, consider Computers4People. Their annual plan works out to about $13/month, making it a low-cost option for a backup or secondary WAN.
